NANDroid backup is the most advanced backup one can take to secure the personal data and customization to save it. Android OS is famous for the leeway that it provides the users to have fun with different applications and various customizations. However, this leeway can put your data into danger. Installing various applications and making changes can sometimes corrupt your data or may delete it completely.
It’s not just about some pictures, but also includes all the apps and their data, custom ROMs that you have installed, various customizations that you have made in your device, music, videos, important documents, contacts, SMSs, etc. There are various methods or applications that can help you back up most of your data on the phone.
However, there is no application that can create a sort of checkpoint in your system that can help recover each and everything that there was before the disaster happened. Hence, NANDroid Backup came into the view.

1. Scenarios where NANDroid backup can help?
There can be various scenarios where a backup can come in handy. NANDroid backup specifically can recover all the lost data. With the sheer number of things that get backed up with NANDroid backup, it works almost like a checkpoint i.e. if you ever lose your data, partly or in whole, you can bring all your data backup with each and every setting of your device in place. Let’s look at some of the scenarios where NANDroid backup can be a life saver:
a. ) Device Lost: If you have lots of data important to you on your device, you should always try to maintain a NANDroid backup of your phone because once your device is lost, no number of locks and Antiviruses can help you retrieve the data on your phone.
b.) Frequent and Major Changes: Many Android really like to have fun with their Android Devices. Sometimes these frequent changes in files system can put your data into danger. Hence, NANDroid backup can be a good option.
c.) If you are a developer: If you are an app Developer and try your apps out on your device, it probably is a good choice to maintain a NANDroid backup of your device.
d.) Switching between Phones: When switching phones, you always must deal with the irritating long process of getting everything back to your new device and still not being able to do so completely. In scenarios like this, NANDroid backup can provide an easy solution to transfer each and every piece of information on your Old phone to your new phone.
2. What are all the things that NANDroid Backup can protect?
NANDroid backups cover everything on your Android phone, from SMS, Call Logs, Images, Videos to device settings and customization, everything. Here is a list of things covered in NANDroid Backup:
- The Operating System
- Custom ROMs installed on your OS.
- All the applications and their data
- All the games with their progress
- All the Pictures
- All your Music
- All your videos
- All Widgets
- All Ringtones
- System Settings
- Passwords
A few more things that I may have forgotten to include.
3. Creating and Restoring NANDroid Backups
Creating a NANDroid backup can be simple yet difficult. It totally depends upon whether you are aware about the right tools that are required for a NANDroid backup.
The best option to create a NANDroid backup is Custom Recovery. The two best Custom Recovery options are TWRP and CWM. (TWRP Being my personal favorite). Make a custom recovery solution (Like TWRP) available on your phone. The rest of the process goes simple- boot into the custom recovery and take backup of your device to your SD card. Yes, it is that simple.
One thing you should note though is that NANDroid backups can be pretty large and hence, you should maintain a fair amount of space in your SD card to create a successful NANDroid backup. NANDroid backups acquire a lot of space because of a simple reason – they backup literally everything on your device.
In the End
NANDroid backups can be really helpful for so many people and because of so many reasons. Because NANDroid backups don’t require any specialized skills, everyone who has important app data on their device should go for a NANDroid backup.
