The Netflix app utilizes an AI model to analyze user’s viewing patterns. This data is used to provide Netflix recommendations which means you would be suggested to view those movies and series that are similar to the movies you have recently watched. I, personally, like this feature and enjoyed watching all the Vampire movies beginning with Twilight. However, after I had watched most of the Vampire movies, I wanted recommendations in other genres as well. That is when I discovered that you can reset Netflix movie recommendations and have decided to share multiple ways to do so in this guide.
Why Would You Want To Reset Netflix Recommendations?
Reason #1 – You shared your Netflix account with your friends and are getting recommendations based on what your friends have watched because they did not create a different profile.
Reason #2 – You watched all the movies in a movie series (like Harry Potter) during the long weekend in the holiday season. After you complete all eight movies in the series, your recommendations only include movies with magic, witches, and wizards.
Reason #3 – You have watched Game of Thrones and you are getting similar recommendations on your Netflix family account which is used by your children as well.
These are some real-life scenarios that people have mentioned on forums when they are searching for ways to reset Netflix movie recommendations. There can be many more such reasons.
How To Reset All Netflix Recommendations?
Method 1 – Delete The Viewing History
Netflix considers the viewing history before it recommends movies to its users. If you delete the list of movies and shows from your viewing history, you reset all Netflix recommendations. Here are the steps –
- Visit Netflix.com and log in to your account if you are not logged in.
- Hover over your profile icon in the top-right corner, select Account, and then choose Profiles from the left sidebar on the next page.
- On the Profiles page, select your Netflix profile. Then, scroll down to the Preferences section and click Viewing Activity.
- Next, click the Hide icon next to the movie you want to remove.
- For TV shows, select the Hide icon next to any episode, then choose Hide series to remove the entire show from your viewing history.
- If you want to clear your entire viewing history, simply scroll down and click Hide All.

Method 2 – Delete Movie Ratings
Your ratings play a key role in Netflix’s recommendation algorithm. By rating a show or using the double thumbs-up feature to rate certain movies more highly, you’ll likely see more similar content suggested in your Netflix movie recommendations. On the other hand, if you rate a show poorly, the algorithm will adjust and stop recommending similar content. To reset Netflix shows recommendations, you need to modify your ratings.
- Hover over your profile picture in the top-right corner and select Account.
- Then, click on Profiles in the left sidebar and choose your profile under the Profile Settings section.
- On the next page, scroll down and select Viewing Activity to view your watch history.
- Lastly, click the Rating option below Activity for [Profile Name] at the top.
- In the Rating tab, you can view, modify, or remove your Netflix ratings. Netflix provides three rating options: Not for Me (thumbs down), I Like This (one thumb up), and Love This (double thumbs up).
- You can adjust your preferences by selecting a different rating for each title.
For example, if you have rated “Double Thumbs Up” for a horror movie and your Netflix movie recommendations are flooded with horror movies, then change the rating to “Thumbs Down” and you will not get any scary flicks in your Netflix recommendations.

Method 3 – Make A New Profile
The most common reason why someone would generate a new profile on his/her Netflix account is to maintain privacy and not get influenced by someone else’s Netflix recommendations. This is true when you share your account with family and friends. The best option is to create a new profile which will not have any recommendations in the beginning.
- To create a new Netflix profile, hover over your profile icon in the top right and select Manage Profiles from the menu.
- On the next page, click Add Profile. In the pop-up window, enter a name for your profile and click Save.
- As you set up your new profile, be sure to choose a few of your favorite titles. Netflix will use these selections to help refine recommendations. You can also personalize your profile during this process.

Have You Resetted Your Netflix Recommendations?
Netflix’s recommendation algorithm takes various factors into account to suggest content that’s suited to you. However, sometimes past movies and shows can affect the accuracy of those recommendations. By using the three tips above, you can guide the algorithm to highlight more relevant titles. Over time, the content you watch will become increasingly influential in shaping the algorithm’s suggestions.
