There’s a small silver lining: TrendForce now forecasts quarter-over-quarter growth slowing to 13-18% for Q3 2026, down from the 40-90% jumps earlier in the year. Slower growth isn’t the same as falling prices. Nobody in the industry expects a return to 2025 pricing before 2027 at the earliest, and some voices at Intel and Silicon Motion point to 2028.
Why Is DDR5 So Expensive?
DDR5 is now the standard type of memory used in modern desktop and laptop computers. As DDR5 has almost replaced other types of conventional memory, its demand is on the rise. Even with every replacement order of older computers, the demand adds up. At the same time, there is massive demand for RAM from the AI driven ecosystem. All this has led to acute shortage of RAM, which has exponentially spiked the prices.
The current DDR5 price increase looks different from past shortages. The 2017-2018 crunch was cyclical: demand spiked, manufacturers underinvested, and supply caught up within about 18 months. One thing is worth watching. As DDR5 gets more valuable, counterfeit modules built from empty chips, relabeled to look legitimate have started floating in the market. That risk rises whenever a product goes from cheap to scarce and expensive. So buy from a retailer you trust.
Should You Buy RAM Now or Wait?
There is no universal answer.
Buy now if you actually need the memory. If your PC regularly runs out of RAM, you are building a new computer or you have found a reasonably priced compatible kit, postponing the purchase purely in the hope of a heavy price drop may not be worthwhile.
Consider waiting if your current RAM is sufficient. If your computer performs well and you are thinking about upgrading from 32GB to 64GB simply for future-proofing, it will not be a sensible call. Paying today’s inflated price for RAM you won’t use for a year or two is a bad trade, especially if prices ever do normalize.
Similarly, if your current machine can hold on for another year or two with basic maintenance, deferring the purchase and spending that budget elsewhere is the more reasonable choice.
Most importantly, don’t panic-buy RAM. A shortage does not mean every memory kit will become more expensive tomorrow. Retail prices can move in both directions, and discounts still appear. Current market data shows that price increases have moderated in some segments as consumer demand weakens.
