Genmoji is one of the most exciting new features of iOS18. A blend of “emoji” and “generative AI,” Genmoji offers a fresh way to express yourself when traditional smiley faces, heart eyes, and melting heads aren’t enough.

What Is Genmoji And How Does It Work?

Genmoji is a new feature in iOS 18 that leverages generative AI to create custom emojis. Simply type a prompt, like “bear driving a car” in your Messages app, and Genmoji will generate a corresponding emoji. Genmojis work just like regular emojis—you can use them in text, or copy, paste, and send them as stickers.

To provide the best possible user experience, Apple is revamping the emoji keyboard to include Unicode characters, Memoji, stickers, and Genmoji emojis. According to a developer session, Genmoji can be used alongside regular text, and these images can be used independently, copied, pasted, and sent as stickers. They will also maintain line height and text formatting.

Which Devices Will Get The Genmoji Update?

Genmoji is only available on Apple devices that support Apple Intelligence. The updates will gradually roll out in the December 2024 iOS 18.2 update.

How To Use The Genmoji Feature?

  • In Messages, tap the “+” icon and choose Image Playground.

  • Follow the prompts to request early access to Genmoji.

  • Then, return to Messages.
  • Compose a new message or reply to an existing thread.
  • Tap the emoji icon.
  • In the text field, type a description, such as “two blue palm trees in the shape of a heart.”
  • Tap Create New Emoji.
  • Choose the version you like best and tap Insert.

Can you use Genmoji in third-party apps?

Yes, you can use Genmoji in third-party apps just like regular emoji characters. Apple’s new API, NSAdaptiveImageGlyph, enables developers to seamlessly integrate Genmoji into their apps. Apple states that Genmoji may be retro-compatible with any rich text view. On older operating systems or app versions, the image will automatically appear as a standard text attachment.
