Genmoji is one of the most exciting new features of iOS18. A blend of “emoji” and “generative AI,” Genmoji offers a fresh way to express yourself when traditional smiley faces, heart eyes, and melting heads aren’t enough.
What Is Genmoji And How Does It Work?
Genmoji is a new feature in iOS 18 that leverages generative AI to create custom emojis. Simply type a prompt, like “bear driving a car” in your Messages app, and Genmoji will generate a corresponding emoji. Genmojis work just like regular emojis—you can use them in text, or copy, paste, and send them as stickers.
To provide the best possible user experience, Apple is revamping the emoji keyboard to include Unicode characters, Memoji, stickers, and Genmoji emojis. According to a developer session, Genmoji can be used alongside regular text, and these images can be used independently, copied, pasted, and sent as stickers. They will also maintain line height and text formatting.

Genmoji is only available on Apple devices that support Apple Intelligence. The updates will gradually roll out in the December 2024 iOS 18.2 update.

Expert-Recommended Tips To Use Genemoji AI
Be Detailed with Your Descriptions
The more specific your description, the more accurate the generated emoji will be. Start with a base (e.g., “cat,” “man,” or “alien”), then add specific features like “wearing sunglasses” or “playing guitar.” Finally, include any additional context, like “on a beach” or “holding a trophy,” for a truly personalized emoji.
Use Simple, Clear Prompts
Keep your prompts clear and easy to understand. For example, “a dog wearing a hat” will give you a more precise result than “a cute dog with a hat on.”
Experiment with Different Combinations
Feel free to mix and match different elements. Try combining animals, objects, and scenarios to create fun and unique emojis that fit your needs.
Adjust for Context
Consider the context of your message. If you’re sending a Genmoji in a formal conversation, make sure your description matches the tone, while in a casual chat, you can get more creative.
Use Rich Text Formatting
Genmoji respects line height and text formatting, so feel free to use it alongside regular text. Whether you’re writing a message or a caption, your Genmoji will fit seamlessly into your content.

Update Regularly
Make sure your iOS as well as Genmoji app are updated to the latest versions. This ensures access to new features and improvements that enhance the Genmoji experience.
Avoid Overloading Descriptions
While detail is important, too many features in a single prompt can confuse the AI. Keep it balanced by focusing on the most important elements.
