How WhatsApp manages Security of our Messages

WhatsApp, a revolution in communication media, which bridges the communication gap between users. From its evolution, WhatsApp has raised its fan followings in every age group. The popularity of WhatsApp has raised to such an extent, that every smartphone user has this application. There are very few applications which become so popular in such a short span of time. Remember those early days, when we sent SMS to our friend. Then came the time when we can send audio, video, images along with text, an era of multimedia messages. After that came a revolution in the form of WhatsApp, which provided us just a different way of communication, a new interactive mode.

How Secure are our messages over WhatsApp

We all share lots of things over WhatsApp, whether it is text, images, audios or videos. It means that daily we transmit/receives lots of data. A big question which arises is that how secure is our data which we send to our family or friends. Is it possible that the messages which we are sending through WhatsApp can be hacked? What if our someone else (an unauthorized person) gains access to our conversations? All these questions get us into a bit of bother. But the good thing is that all the data which we send to another person is secured by E2EE, i.e. end to end encryption.

What is this End to End Encryption (E2EE)?

It is one of the most advanced encryption technology in which only the sender and the receiver can read what is sent. In this way, the message which is sent between a sender and receiver is encrypted. This can only be decrypted by a key, which is known to the sender and the receiver. Therefore, no third person can read that message as the key needed for decryption is possessed only by sender and receiver.
WhatsApp is also using same encryption technology, ensuring that only we and the person we are communicating can read the message, and nobody else not even WhatsApp. It means the messages which we are sending cannot be read even by WhatsApp, the company itself which is providing the service.

How this End to End Encryption works

When we send messages it can only be unlocked by the receiver for which it is intended. When we send any of the messages it is secured or encrypted. Only the receiver for which that message is intended has that key which can successfully decrypt that message. This process happens automatically, the only thing to make sure is that you have the latest version of WhatsApp application installed on your device. When we first send any message to any new contact, just after sending the message we receive a confirmation, that message sends to this chat and calls are now secured with end- to- end encryption. We can also verify that whether our messages are secured with end to end encryption by following these simple steps:

  1. Open WhatsApp application.
    Tap on contact name
  2. Tap on the name of the contact.
    Tap on View contact.
  3. On the right corner of the screen click on three dots and tap on View contact.
    Tap on Encryption
  4. Now tap on Encryption.
    Security code window
  5. A new window will open with a QR code and 60-digit number.

We can scan either scan this QR code or visually compare this 60-digit number to confirm that this message is end-to-end encrypted. If we scan the QR code, and the code is the same, a green checkmark will appear, as a confirmation. Now we can be assured that at our messages and calls are secure.
This additional security provided by WhatsApp ensure that all messages and calls which we make through the application are secure and can never be intercepted. This new security measure gives a strong confirmation that WhatsApp really cares about its user’s security and integrity.
