Disable access to the Windows update feature

This setting enables you to disable the Windows update feature so that no body else can access it.

Tweak for : Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows 2000
The user can update Windows components and software with latest versions through this setting whenever required but as an administrator, you may not want this to happen. So, you can disable this setting.

This setting does not allow users to connect to the Windows Update Web site.
It also removes the Windows Update hyperlink from the Start menu and from the Tools menu in Internet Explorer.

You must change the values in the registry.

For this, go to Start > Run menu, enter “regedit” and navigate to the registry path listed below. If the subkey “\CurrentVersion\Policies\WindowsUpdate” is not present, create it as explained below. Then, create an DWORD value name “DisableWindowsUpdateAccess”,if this value does not exist. Now, right-click and modify the value data box with “1” to enable the setting and “0” to disable it.

After this setting, navigate to the registry path listed below. If the subkey “\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer” is not present, create it as explained below. Then, create an DWORD value name “NoWindowsUpdate”,if this value does not exist. Now, right-click and modify the value data box with “1” to enable the setting and “0” to disable it.

Click “OK” and close the registry editor.

Restart your system.

The '.reg' file will disable access to Windows Update.

The '.reg' file will enable access to Windows Update.

Apply registry settings according below given steps of screenshots with related changes.

The Windows update feature is disabled.

The Windows update feature is enabled by default.

First, click the 'Start' button, and select 'Run'. In the resulting dialog box, type 'regedit'.

Now, go to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies] and create a subkey 'WindowsUpdate'.

Create a DWORD value 'DisableWindowsUpdateAccess' under the subkey 'WindowsUpdate'.

Now, right click on the DWORD value 'DisableWindowsUpdateAccess' and select 'Modify'.

Set the value data as '1' and click 'OK'.

Further, go to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\] and create a DWORD value 'NoWindowsUpdate'.

Right click on the DWORD value 'NoWindowsUpdate' and select 'Modify'.

Finally set the value data as '1' for the DWORD value 'NoWindowsUpdate' and click 'OK'.

Disable automatically restart if update has been installed

This setting lets you disable the auto restart option if Windows update has been installed in the system.

Set Windows Automatic Updates.
