Change the Search Assistant URL in Internet Explorer.

This setting enables you to change MSN search page to a different URL of your choice.

Tweak for : Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows 2000
As a default feature, when you click the Search button on Internet Explorer, the left panel will call a page which will look for the arguments passed on MSN Search. This setting enables you to change MSN Search page to a different URL of your choice, like Google.

For this, go to Start > Run, enter “regedit” and navigate to the registry path listed below. You can create a String value “SearchAssistant”, if this value does not exist.

Now, right-click and modify the value of the desired search URL (like “http://www.google.com/ie”). However, if you want to show MSN Search again, change the value data to “http://ie.search.msn.com/{SUB_RFC1766}/srchasst/srchasst.htm”.

The changes take effect after a restart or logoff.

Using Google as Search Assistant.reg

The '.reg' file using Google as the Search Assistant.

The '.reg' file uses MSN as default Search Assistant.

Apply registry settings according below given steps of screenshots with related changes.

The 'Search Assistant' in Internet Explorer is changed.

The default MSN 'Search Assistant' is visible in Internet Explorer.

First, click the 'Start' button, and select 'Run'. In the resulting dialog box, type "regedit".

Go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search\] , right-click on "SearchAssistant" and click on 'Modify'.

Finally, enter the value User defined Search URL like "http://www.google.com/ie" in the text box and click on 'OK'.
